IAHD INSTRUCTOR
Scuba diving is a very social, positive and exciting activity.
Learning to scuba dive for someone with a serious physical
disability provides numerous benefits. For those who are “tied to a
wheelchair”, scuba diving provides real freedom of movement! For
many it has also proven to be invaluable rehabilitation therapy.
The International Association for Handicapped Divers (IAHD) is a
non-profit organisation, whose main goal is to provide the
physically disabled with the means to positively experience the
underwater environment through scuba diving. |

The IAHD
Instructor Training Course (ITC) consists of three days classroom,
pool and open water training and teaches you how to manage problems
you can expect to encounter when training physically disabled
divers. You are trained in various methods of assisting those with
sight impairment, hearing impairment, spinal injuries, amputations,
etc. The training also focuses on an awareness of various logistical
considerations and how to plan accordingly.
Through simulations in the confined water and open water sections of
the ITC, you receive first hand experience in learning to understand
and cope with the problems associated with your student’s
disabilities. Upon successful completion of the course, you are
awarded the IAHD Instructor or Divemaster rating, in accordance with
your primary training organisation.
